Moving Day, Part I

So, today we embark on the craziest weekend ever!! Atleast this year I'm not required to work (and close) at a restaurant while attempting to move.

Everything is packed up, including the last of the sparkle balls for the cats (I found 21 of them under the stove the other day!!). I finished last night around 10pm (not too bad, wished it was earlier, as I still had to head into work today, and not Will) and ended up sleeping on the couch, for a horrible night's sleep.

Couches are meant for naps, not for nighttime sleeping!!!

So, after playing with the cats for an hour on the couch at 3am, I finally could get back to sleep for a few hours before I had to head out to work.

Will stayed home today to finish his cleaning and priming of the walls. He was taking the hoards of garbage that we had piled up last night and talked with the super and how they're renovating the whole building as people vacate their individual apartments, so he said we didn't have to bother priming the walls (why did they tell us that at inspection time, then??).

Will is picking me up at work today, so I had to give him specific directions, and tell him where I would meet him, and then we head out into rush hour!

We pick up our truck at 5pm (after eating the 10th meal of fast food in a row) and move with the elevator booked between 6-8pm ready to hand the keys in by 8pm.

From there we head to my mom's where we are spending the night with all our cats, and hers, and Stephanie's to pack up the rest of Steph's stuff and our furniture that we bought from Jenn & Scott.

Who knows what time we will be done packing everything up, but we're up again for the new set of keys at 9am the next day!!

Part II will follow shortly...

Fresh Air

I've often wondered when I'm outside how much pollution I am actually inhaling. Just walking down 2 blocks at work in downtown Ottawa and all I can smell is fumes from busses and cigarettes. I've always been very sensitive to smell, and that triggers something inside me to try and get as far away from that smell as possible. I guess it's kind of hard when someone sits next to you on the bus wearing strong cologne/perfume. Even smokers who come on the bus, I can smell it throughout the whole bus. I find it the worst, however, when I am waiting for the bus. I have to stand closer to the street because I am so short that I cannot see the bus numbers any other way, so everytime a bus is stopped to pick up/drop off passengers, I get this strong smell somehow always directed right at me and I feel like I can't breathe. Also, waiting for the bus, there are smokers everywhere and I cannot get away from them. Which makes me wonder, as much as I want to step outside to get away from the circulated, dry air to get "fresh" air, how fresh is it??

Ikea Deliveries?!?

I found this photo on a friend's website and thought that was really cool. Canada should totally invest in this delivery system. The picture is actually taken in Italy and no joke, this is how Ikea actually delivers its furniture!! Pretty cool!!! I am a big fan of Ikea, and I find their commercials to be funny (like the family all waiting by the door for the new Ikea catalogue, and then none of them giving up their corner grasping, despite efforts of distraction"Do I smell steak?? Nice try!!)

Treadmills

This is the best use of treadmills I have ever seen. I kind of wish I could do this at the gym sometimes, rather than run. These people are very smooth in their actions, which makes it so fascinating!! Check it out here!

I'm just sitting here....

I'm just sitting here waiting for time to run out. I was told to make sure that the person I was replacing would still have work when he came back from vacation, and I just looked at the pile of work that was left to do, and I realized I should've left him more. So, I'm just sitting here waiting for time to pass, thinking about the millions of things I need to be doing within the next 7 days.

I cannot believe that in one week's time from now, I'll be in a new house, hopefully mostly unpacked and painted!! I know everyone is probably sick of hearing me talk about moving and packing and paint and such, but there really isn't any other thought that goes through my head except for that.

My phone at work had been broken a day after I replaced someone on vacation, and it finally works (after new cords didn't do it) when all of a sudden, the phone rang. It really startled me, as if that shouldn't really be happening, or someone with super powers was able to get through the line, but no one else was. It ended up being the phone company calling to say - your phone is now working. Well, clearly!! The phone rang and I could answer it!! Luckily there weren't too many messages to handle.

I'm slowly running out of food. Our freezer is practially empty (except for an ice cube tray and freezies, I believe) and our fridge is diminishing in fullness. Our cupboards still have food, but I'm going to get sick of having the same stuff for the next week. I usually look forward to having a meal when I get home that has been cooked on the stove or in the oven, and not just microwaved or eaten cold. That's pretty much what I eat at work, so I need a change, but with me having to pack when I have time (the weekend) that leaves no other option than peanut butter sandwiches and soup and chef boyardee for meals.

6 sleeps left!!

Reality TV

How is it that I'm totally obsessed with reality TV? Is it that I think I can relate to these people more, because I know they're not acting? Is it becuase I think I can participate in their show better than them? Is it that if feels like real drama? I don't know, but I know that I'm completely obsessed with it.

This past summer, I ended up watching America's Got Talent, Big Brother and Treasure Hunters. In the fall, I will be watching America's Next Top Model, Survivor, The Apprentice, The Amazing Race. I think the only "real" shows I'll be watching in the fall will be Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives. Those are the only 2 that I've really caught on to this past year. There are so many new shows this fall, with a lot of well-known actors as well. Crazy! I guess it's the "thing to do" now.

If you have not yet heard in newspapers, internet or radio, Survivor is dividing the people into 4 teams: African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian). There has been much controversy over this division of race. What do you think? Survivor starts on Global Sept. 14

Oh, and I just read that Apple is recalling several million laptops for overheating (and catching on fire) Sony batteries!! I am actually getting a bit worried owning a laptop!!

Also, what's with Pluto not being a planet anymore?? How come all of a sudden they decide to change the definition of a planet?

Body Combat

So, this past Sunday Stephanie and I tried a different class. We originally thought this was supposed to be Body Step which is like Step-Aerobics, but it ended up being Body Combat - which is like Tae-Kwon-Doe.

The instructor warned us not to hate it the first time and give it a few chances, but I'm sorry - I will not be back. This class is not good for someone who has asthma. I lost my breath several times and felt like I was going to faint.

Also, Steph and I had so much trouble finding our own co-ordination skills. We looked like we were so lost - and we were. I was always told my positioning was wrong and I always started the exercises on the wrong side (as I was told by Stephanie). I think I'll stick to my Body Pump and treadmill.

We were bouncing on every beat of music and had like a 2 minute break throughout the hour long class. This was not the class for me.

Busses

I've been debating taking this different bus that shows up like every 5 minutes compared to my regular bus which takes me closer to home.

Yesterday, I took the quicker bus (95) and made it home the same time I would have if I took the other bus (51) with stopping in 2 stores and walking further. So, I debated if I should attempt taking the 95 more frequently. My pros and cons are this - - Pros: quicker, more frequent busses Cons: too many people. I kept getting squished into people and had one hand trying to hang on to my body with shoes that have no grip, so everytime a sharp corner comes around, I'm straining my harm to stay in one spot, and end up hitting 3-4 people with me and my bag!!

I think I would rather take the 51 so that I can atleast get a seat, and if it's a longer ride, so what!! I'll read my book, instead of stressing over who I think I'm going to hit on the next corner

Slowly Running out of Time

I'm slowly running out of time before I have the "big move".

I have somehow, magically been able to stick to my moving schedule I created for myself, which means there's less work in the end.

All that is left to pack is - the dreaded kitchen (dishes, food, pots/pans, etc...) and the rest of my clothes.

Everywhere you look there are boxes in the way and stuff that needs to be brought down to the dumpster.

Will still has to finish (or start) priming the walls. He's done one wall (of 8), and it makes the wall look purple with a spongey finish. The landlord said we just had to prime, not paint!

Everything is booked, and confirmed for us (elevator, parking spots, truck, cable/phone hook-up) so I'm less stressed than when it was this time last week.

It's depressing, though having hardly any food in our place. All we can buy are canned goods, and I like fresh stuff better. It seems like I'm eating the same stuff for lunch and dinner every day.

There's only 10 days before I move out (including today) and most of the shopping is done, but I have to wait until next paycheck to cover the rest, which happens to be this week!!

It is also depressing when last week it was so cold, and I had already packed up all my long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, pants, wooly socks, flannel duvet cover, goose-feathered duvet. I find myself shivering overnight (and steal all the blankets) and at work, the sun shows up in the window for 20 minutes, and then it's gone.

However, I am very excited to be heading out to this new place, as it's a large upgrade from where I am living now (refresh your mind with the blog titled No More...), so I'm really looking forward to being in the new place, with a new look, new scenery, more space, and a new roommate!!

10 sleeps left!!

Moving Truck Headaches

So, we had a little issue with our truck reservation the other day. U-Haul sent us an email confirmation after Will talked to them on the phone and said that we could have the truck from 6pm Aug 31 till before 6:30am Aug 31. Now does that make any sense to you? So, he called them up and told them what he told them last time how we need it pretty much for 24hrs, and they said the couldn't do it, but that the 6:30am Aug 31 was a typo and was meant for us to have the truck from 6pm Thurs to 6:30am Friday. How does that work when we don't get our keys until 9am?? We told them that, and they said that it was stupid that we don't get our keys until 9am and that there was nothing they could do for us.

Next, out of desperation, Will called National Truck and Car Rental, got a quote for 24hrs. Talked to me and I gave him my credit card info to reserve it. Will calls back not even 20 minutes later from talking to them before and they said that the person he talked to assumed there was a truck available when there really wasn't.

So, Will is going through the phonebook and FINALLY we get a confirmation (I still won't believe it until we have the keys in our hands for the truck) with a confirmation number for 24hrs starting at 5pm Aug. 31. We are now with Budget in Kanata (which is a little extra for gas, but we were getting desperate). I knew that we were not supposed to start looking for trucks half-way through the month of the busiest moving time in North America, but I just kept forgetting.

But now, we have a truck for sure, we know where we're picking it up, we know what time we're picking it up at, we have a confirmation number, we know what our rate is, so hopefully nothing else goes wrong with our moving as there is only 14 days!!! CRAZY!!!

Deal or No Deal

We all know the game Deal or No Deal on NBC 3 nights a week.

And we all play along with it, trying to guess our suitcase number, and whether or not we would make a deal or not based on someone else's pickings.

Well, there's an easier way to play (obviously without the cash prize), with no stallings by Howie Mandel and no commercials, or meeting the family.

Simply, click here.

You will be in your own game of Deal or No Deal, deciding which suitcases to open, whether to take the deal or not, and whether you made the right decision.

My first game I made a deal for $330,000 for the $0.01 that was in my suitcase!!

Try it!!

Cold

I'm sitting here in the office, cold, shivering with goosebumps, reading an article about how when your body is cold, you are not as productive as when you are comfortably warm.

I thrive on being work-oriented, and when I get cold, I DO realize that I am not as energetic to work, but I concentrate more of my energy into getting warm, and what I can eat/drink to get warm, and where to buy it.

The article also mentioned that one of the things that keeps you warmer is to keep your toes covered. Lucky for me, I haven't packed all my shoes yet, but I do love my flip flops!! It's a tough battle for my feet.

Also, I prefer to wear skirts, and I'm pretty sure that will not help me stay warm, it's just hard when I'm in the middle of packing everything I own, thinking I'm moving at the end of the summer, realizing all my warm clothes (long sleeve shirts, boots, sweaters) are packed in a box somewhere among the mess in my apartment.

I'm also finding it colder at night time. I've packed up my duvet already and am just sleeping with a quilt (which I am known for hogging throughout the night) and hiding myself in it like an eskimo.

Because of this sudden change in weather (last week was 50 degrees with humidity, working in 20 degree building, living in 50 degree apartment to this week being 20 degree building, 25 degree weather, 10 degree apartment - I'm sure I'm probably exaggerating) I am developing a slight cold virus adding to the sudden lack of sleep I'm getting thinking of everything that still needs to be done.

Still, I can't help but find myself always cold - and I want it to stop!!

Shopping

So, this past weekend, knowing that time is shortly running out before the big move (17 sleeps now), we headed out to do some shopping just so that we wouldn't spend the money before getting everything we needed!!

We headed to Ikea, Home Outfitters, Walmart, Home Depot getting primer, a chair, vacuum and bathroom towels. There's still some other things left to get, but everything is slowly coming into place. Oh, and Stephanie and I decided on a colour for the main room, once I had my dreams crushed of having green, I reluctantly chose a different colour that everyone would agree on. We ended up picking all of the paints, except the kitchen.

We also finally have confirmation of a truck!!! It was hard to work around being under 25, and how one person couldn't reserve it while another person picked it up, etc... but we found one that liked us!!

My place seems to be filling up a lot more quickly with boxes, and with the chair, and finding it harder to maneuver and to find the cats sleeping spots.

17 days!!!

Travelling

I'm on a non-creative wave this week with not blogging about anything happening in my life (which, isn't that the point of a blog?), instead stealing neat statistics from other sources.

Here is yet another one, hopefully I will be more interesting post-weekend when my brain has had time to sleep.

Here are the top 10 world's most expensive/priciest cities and 80% of them are in Europe with 2 of them in Switzerland.

10. Helsinki
9. Stockholm
8. Dublin
7. New York
6. Geneva
5. Tokyo
4. Zurich
3. Copenhagen
2. London
1. Oslo

Speaking of travelling....
It's pretty ridiculous when you can't bring any liquids/gels on board of an airplane now. That includes hair gel, any drinks, hand cream, toothpaste. What if you're a travelling businessman?? All they bring on their business trips are just enough to fill a carry-on bag. Now they're going to have to dump out all grooming materials, or check their baggage at the beginning of the airline process. I wonder how that will affect them??

hairspray

I cannot wait for Hairspray to come to the NAC next year!!! Tickets don't go on sale until the end of January 2007, so I have to try really hard to make a mental note to buy them!! It comes to the theatre March 13-17, 2007. Also, they are coming out with a movie version (even though, the musical was based on the movie in 1988 (just like The Producers)) next year. They begin rehearsals this summer!!! There are lots of stars in the movie, that it makes me want to see the musical even more before the movie comes out!!

In Hairspray it's 1962 - the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion--to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in Hairspray! Welcome to the '60s!

The celebrities signed up for the movie are:
I'm so excited!!! Can you tell??

Holiday Weekend

So, this past weekend was pretty busy for me...

Friday
I get home from work early (because everyone else was leaving early) and find out I'm going out for the night with Will. I head out to Bayshore to pick out a watch that he was going to buy me (to add to the books he already bought for me). We head out to Baton Rouge in Kanata (downtown would've been cool too, but I was already downtown all week - and the restaurant is only a block from my office too) and I had a great meal. I had filet mignon with their delicious baked potatoes (I always get the baked potatoes). This was Will's first time in Baton Rouge, and he loved it!! He loved the atmosphere, the food, the people. It was great! It's safe to say we will be returning to it!! Afterwards, we made it to our movie in time and watched Pirates of the Carribbean (finally!!) Dead Man's Chest and I found it to be a tad predictable but it was funny and great none-the-less. By the time we got home it was 11:30 and Will had been at work for 6am that morning. So his energy fuel was dying when we got home (I'm impressed he didn't fall asleep in the movie)

Saturday
I head over to see Jenn & Scott's new house (currently in the making) and it's been wrapped (the outside of the house) which means it's ready to get the stonework and siding on. And they have insulation in their walls inside, which means the next step is drywall, hopefully!! It's such a gorgeous house, and HUGE yard!!! WOW! I cannot wait until they move in to see the finishing product! And it will be so cool to have Christmas there this year!! After the house-visiting, we grabbed some lunch and headed to Steph's current residence (with 1 month left now), but none of us went swimming, but I attempted to suntan. Didn't work too well, lying on the diving board - - worried that A) I would fall in, B) I would get pushed in. We ended up getting pizza (me & Steph) and watched Rumor Has It with Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner. It was ok. A little odd, and the whole "I was born less than 9 months after my parents were married - - my mother must've had an affair" thing bothered me abit... haven't people heard of premature births??? Or, in the more modern sense, pre-marital affections??

Sunday
Stephanie & I headed downtown for the day to check out the Busker Festival (which some were good, and some I thought the people were seriously crazy) We ended up going shopping at Rideau before the festival started (noon) and I bought a pair of jeans from Jacob, a shirt from Tommy Hilfiger, and some Yoga/athletic pants from Old Navy and spending only $50 (pre-tax). We grabbed lunch, headed to Sparks Street for the festival and decided only to stay and watch the "Stomp" group. We stood in the sun, and I could feel sweat dripping down on me and feeling a little light-headed, knowing that I just got burnt to a crisp. We then headed to the market to check out the jewelry and then headed back to Rideau for more shopping. I was completely exhausted and just crashed as soon as I got home. And true enough, I got burned, not too badly, but it still itches and aches.

Monday
Good old Holiday Monday. I love long weekends!! I usually end up doing so much on the weekends, that I so drained by Monday morning having to wake up at 6am. But this extra day was just what I needed. I dropped Will off at work and headed to Walmart to pick up some packing tape (and other stuff - - flip flops for $2.50) and just relaxed at home doing a bit of packing every few hours. I have made a "To Do" list of stuff both Will and I have to do before we move (23 sleeps now), and I'm impressed at how well I'm staying on top of it. It's still going to be so busy the last week of August, but there's nothing I can do about it. It's not like I can pack up my kitchen stuff, when I still have lower the level of food in the fridge/freezer. Then we went grocery shopping (24hr. Loeb seemed to be the only store open past 6pm), and relaxed at home.

Overall, a good weekend. Only 3 weekends until we move!!! :S

Movie Personality

Find out what movie most reflects your personality....
http://similarminds.com/movie.html

Mine is Mr. Smith goes to Washington (1939)

Haven't seen it - - but now I am intrigued to see what it is all about.

No More....

As Will & I are counting down how many days (currently 28) we have left in our apartment, we have stated some of the things that we will not have to deal with anymore when we move:

No More....

....black cats on our balcony trying to get in the door because it is really hungry
....loud music that vibrates through our walls, and plays the same song over and over and over
....lobbies that smell like garbage
....grocery carts in the hallway of our floor
....construction at 6am
....constant aroma of cigarettes (and sometimes other stuff)
....people touching our laundry one minute after the machine finished so they can use it
....construction at the parking lot entrance causing cars to squeeze through
....screeching tires
....motorcycle revving/idling
....hardwood flooring
....crazy people
....kitchen sinks that do not drain
....daily sirens going by
....heat waves with no breeze whatsoever (it always seems to be cooler outside than inside)
....people standing in my parking space with their dogs and choose not to move when they see me clearly trying to get in
....trying to scrounge to find enough quarters and loonies for the week's laundry (realizing that banks are closed on Sundays)

Fire Alarm

So, today we had the fire alarm go off - and I've heard them testing it last week, but to have to go through the process of turning everything off, grabbing everything I own, walking down the stairs across the street with everyone else in the building (I believe there is 24 floors) and try to find everyone from my office.

Besides, my desk is right below the speaker for the alarm system, and let me tell you - - it's VERY noticeable!!

It turned out to be a false alarm, so then everyone from the building has to get back in at the same time.

Oh, and Stephanie - - I did try to get the firemen's attention for you, but they were a little too busy to talk to me across the street. Sorry!!

There are only 6 elevators that hold about 8 people, and you can't take the stairs up because the door to get onto the floor from the stairs is automatically locked.

Atleast it didn't happen yesterday in 50 degree weather or in a thunderstorm!!

I have now been to 3 (yes, three) Body Pump classes in over a week - plus a separate workout voluntarily, and I can finally feel it working. The pain has gone away, but I still don't want to add any more weight to my bar yet, just incase I injure my muscles from during my first class.
